Some of the most overlooked films by the Jan 7th Golden Globes were finally given their due by this morning’s Oscar Nominations. With a Best Supporting nom for Mary J. Blige and writers Virgil Williams and Dee Rees for Best Adapted Screenplay, Mudbound finally emerged from the sidelines as an Oscar contender. And with audible sighs of relief resonating around the country Jordan Peele’s crowdpleaser Get Out has finally been nominated for Best Picture, while Kumail Nanjiani’s Big Sick took a nom for Best Screenplay.
Octavia Spencer has once again been nominiated for Best Supporting Actrees for her compelling performance in The Shape of Water and Denzel Washington and Daniel Kaluuya have been nominated for Best Actor for Roman J Israel, Esq. and Get Out respectively.
With no one of color nominated in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories, it’s evident we still have a long way to go in diversifying Hollywood. The absence of Latino names on these lists save Guillermo Del Toro for Best Director continues to be a problem. But at least this year’s awards will provide some suspense as those artists who were snubbed by the Globes get their names read at the Oscars.
